Detroit Lions safety Brian Branch was in trouble after an incident during their recent game against the Green Bay Packers. Branch was ejected from the game after a helmet-to-helmet hit by Packers winger Bo Melton. As he left the field, he made an inappropriate gesture toward a Packers fan, resulting in a second unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Branch issued a public apology, expressing regret for his behavior and admitting that it was not consistent with how he wanted to be perceived. “It’s not something I want to show or want people to pay attention to me like that,” he explained, when responding to reporters. Reflecting on the heat of that moment, he apologized to fans who witnessed his actions, vowing that similar behavior “will not happen again”.
Although Branch was initially disappointed by the player’s expulsion, his opinion changed upon reviewing the incident. He conceded that the order was reasonable, admitting, “I completely agree with that order. My aim is obviously high, but I never intended to aim for the head. Moving forward, I have to lower my aim.” Branch’s response reflects both his professionalism and his commitment to evolving his approach on the field to avoid similar infractions in the future. At just 23 years old, Branch has quickly become a key figure for the Lions, recording four interceptions in just seven games this season, surpassing last year’s mark. His accomplishments even earned him votes for AP Defensive Rookie of the Year, cementing his rising reputation.
After the incident, the NFL confirmed through senior vice president of officiating Perry Fewell that the decision to eject Branch was not made hastily on the field but in conjunction with the replay center’s review of the hit. Additionally, the NFL clarified to Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio that there would be no fines for these statements because Branch’s comments did not challenge the integrity or professionalism of the referees.
