The incident occurred late in the first inning at Yankee Stadium. With the Yankees trailing 2-0, second baseman Gleyber Torres hit a fly ball into foul territory in right field. Dodgers right fielder Mookie Betts tracked the ball, reached for it and completed the shot. Surprisingly, two fans grabbed his glove, wrestled with Betts for the foul ball, and the ball was thrown out. But one fan grabbed Betts’ wrist, while the other reached in to grab the ball, and the ball bounced off Betts’ glove.
Betts was still rewarded with an out and the Dodgers kept the lead at least until the end of the third inning. That’s when Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe hit a grand slam into the left field seats to give New York a 5-1 lead.
