In the final days of the presidential race, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump returned to campaigning in swing states while addressing inflammatory comments targeting supporters. Trump distanced himself from a speaker who called Puerto Rico “an island of trash” at a rally on Sunday. Trump did not directly condemn the comment, instead claiming that he “didn’t hear it.” Trump’s campaign quickly turned Biden’s comments into a campaign opportunity. In Wisconsin on Wednesday, Trump climbed aboard a garbage truck emblazoned with his name and later reiterated his position at a rally, trying to link Harris’ campaign to Biden’s comments. Trump’s divisive rhetoric marked a sharp difference with Harris, who focused on a message of unity in the battleground states of Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Wisconsin.
Trump is also casting doubt on the voting process, which has taken place in several battleground states. In North Carolina, he suggested that election officials could hide early voting ballots to influence the outcome. Instead, he called for a “one-day vote”. In Pennsylvania, he mischaracterized investigations into suspicious ballot applications as fake ballots. And in Wisconsin, he criticized the use of electronic voting machines and called for all paper ballots. According to the Brennan Center for Justice, 98% of all votes will be cast on paper in the 2024 election. The only jurisdictions without paperwork were Louisiana and Texas — both states that Trump was expected to win and that did not affect the election results. Harris and Trump will head west on Thursday. Both will go to Arizona and Nevada while Trump will stop in New Mexico.
