He once praised the economic philosophy of the president-elect, and appreciated Mr. Trump’s use of tariffs as a negotiating tool. Another potential name is John Paulson. He is a major donor to Mr. Trump’s election campaign, and has many years of experience in the financial sector. A fundraiser organized by Paulson in April raised more than $50 million for Mr. Trump’s campaign.

Larry Kudlow, who served as Director of the National Economic Council for much of Mr. Trump’s first term, also has the opportunity to become secretary of finance or take on a position related to the economic field if he cares. Two other names that Mr. Trump could put on the consideration list are Robert Lighthizer and Howard Lutnick. Lighthizer served as US trade representative under Donald Trump as president. And Lutnick is the longtime CEO of financial services company Cantor Fitzgerald.
