Ballyshaners Alexandria’s 42nd St. Patrick’s Day Parade will be held on Saturday, March 1 in Old Town Alexandria. Residents and tourists are encouraged to arrive early to enjoy events at one of the DC area’s best parades. All events are free to the public. Alexandria is proud to be the first to host a St. Patrick’s Day Parade in the DC area. Traditionally, this parade is held on the first Saturday in March and attracts the best participants. The parade often features bagpipe bands, Irish dancing schools, community groups and many other performers and entertainers. The parade officially begins at the corner of King Street and St. Asaph at 12:30 p.m., with dignitaries leading the procession at 12:15 p.m. The parade proceeds east on King Street, turns north on Lee Street and turns west on Cameron Street, ending at the intersection of Cameron Street and Pitt Street.

Ballyshaners is a non-profit, non-sectarian and non-partisan organization established exclusively for charitable and educational purposes. All members of the organization are volunteers and do not receive compensation for their participation. Our aim is to promote and preserve Irish Heritage. One way we do this is by organizing and running the Alexandria St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Ballyshaners is an organization run entirely by volunteers. Our meetings are monthly from mid-March through December and weekly in January until Parade Day. There is no participation fee. Members can participate as much or as little as time allows. In addition to the leadership team, members tend to help manage our two fundraising activities or at the Irish Festival. Opportunities include collecting a few items for a silent auction, overseeing auctions, selling raffle tickets at fundraisers, or helping the Festival run smoothly. Others help sell advertising for the Parade Program or serve as the primary contact for dignitaries on Parade Day.
