According to Vic Tafur of The Athletic, the Raiders’ assistant coaches have been asked to administer a less intensive version of a physical fitness test specifically for players affiliated with the team. The tactic clearly helped lighten the mood, but Pierce said he also “wanted to challenge our coaches” and get them focused on their own health. Ryan, the senior defensive assistant, told Tafur he lost eight points on the effort.

The Raiders went 5-4 under Pierce in 2023 after he replaced Josh McDaniels midway through the year. Although their performance on the field improved in the second half, his biggest impact may have come from behind the scenes. As interim manager, the 45-year-old made his point and insisted that wearing silver and black brought higher expectations. Pierce’s approach hasn’t changed since he was promoted to the full-time position.
