The Kansas City Chiefs have received some news regarding the status of winger Rashee Rice ahead of Monday’s game against the New Orleans Saints. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Rice “received positive news today” even though his “season is expected to end.” Rapoport notes that the catcher’s LCL ligament may be the only ligament that needs to be rehabilitated. While Rice being out for the rest of the season isn’t the news the Chiefs were hoping for, it could be a positive development for the catcher’s long-term future. “If tomorrow’s surgery confirms that was the only injury if his ACL doesn’t need to be reconstructed, that’s great news,” Rapoport wrote. “He will be healthy enough for next season.”
Rice’s failure is just one of many problems Kansas City faces on the offensive line. Midfielder Isiah Pacheco is sidelined with a fibula injury, while Marquise “Hollywood” Brown may be out for the rest of the season with a sternum injury and will require surgery. It’s a credit to quarterback Patrick Mahomes and head coach Andy Reid that Kansas City remains 4-0 on the season and is the only undefeated team in the AFC. But becoming the first team in NFL history to win three consecutive Super Bowls won’t be easy with so much offensive firepower out. The Chiefs will need to rely more on star offensive lineman Travis Kelce. They also have Xavier Worthy and JuJu Smith-Schuster at linebacker and a strong defense that can keep them in position in most games. But Rice’s injury is a blow, as he was expected to be the team’s No. 1 option at linebacker throughout the campaign as Kansas City chased the Lombardi Trophy.
