NEWPORT, Ky. A local nonprofit kicked off National Recovery Month at the Purple People Bridge Thursday night, hoping to eliminate stereotypes about addiction. Hosted by Transitions Inc., the main theme of the event was hope, with organizers conveying the message that treatments are effective and patients can recover. Jim Beiting, CEO of Transition Inc., a nonprofit that provides treatment and recovery services, said the main goal is to eliminate stereotypes. “Normalize it, talk about it, get it out there,” Beiting said. “Having people in recovery talk about it makes it feel very normal, and makes it easier for people to call us.”

The organization held its second Walk the Road to Recovery event in September, national recovery month. “They think it’s some kind of moral weakness or failure, or they’re just weak, and that’s completely contrary to the nature of the problem,” Beiting said. Cincinnati Mayor Aftab Pureval was one of the speakers at Thursday’s event, echoing Transition’s message of hope.
