The Pitt Panthers will play the new ACC team the Cal Golden Bears in Week 7 in the league’s home opener at Acrisure Stadium at 3:30 pm on October 12 in front of a nationally televised audience. Pitt also played for ESPNU in a dominant win over Kent State in the season opener in Week 1. They will also face rival Syracuse on October 24 in Week 9 on ESPN. The only game the Panthers did not play on national television was a 73-17 win over an FCS opponent. Cal has a 3-2 record on the season and 0-2 in the ACC. They won their first three games against FCS opponent UC Davis, 31-13 on August 31 at home.

They lost away from home to Florida State on September 21, 14-9, and then lost a 35-10 lead midway through the third quarter to No. 8 Miami at home in primetime, losing 39-38 on a last-minute touchdown. The Golden Bears hosted College Gameday for the first time against the Hurricanes and will be broadcast on national television for the second straight week. Pitt and Cal have played each other five times, with Pitt leading 3-2 in the series. This will be the first match between the two schools in nearly 60 years. They faced each other in the home opener in the 1950s, when Pitt won the first game 27-7 at Pitt Stadium in the 1955 home opener and Cal won won 14-0 in 1956 in Berkeley, California. The Panthers and Golden Bears played a home and away game again in the early 1960s. The Panthers won both games, including a narrow 26-24 away win in 1962 and then a convincing win. 35-15 at home in 1963.
