The Super Bowl was created as part of the 1966 merger agreement between the NFL and the American Football League (AFL) so that the best football teams could compete for the championship. The Super Bowl was originally named the AFL–NFL World Championship Game until the “Super Bowl” moniker was adopted in 1969, starting with Super Bowl III. The first four Super Bowls were played from 1967 to 1970 before the merger agreement was approved, with the NFL and AFL each winning two. All Super Bowls since Super Bowl V (1971) have been contested by the two winning teams of each league’s respective division, with the AFC and NFC tied with 27 wins.
Of the NFL’s 32 current teams, 20 have won the Super Bowl and 15 teams have more than one championship. The Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots of the AFC hold the record for most Super Bowl championships with 6; The Patriots also hold the record for most Super Bowl appearances with 11 times. Of the NFC teams, the Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers have won the most championships with 5 times each, the Cowboys also appeared the most with 8 times. The AFC’s Patriots and Denver Broncos hold the record for the most Super Bowl losses with five. The AFC’s Baltimore Ravens and the NFC’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers are the only two teams to go undefeated through multiple Super Bowls, each winning two. Of the 12 teams that have never won a Super Bowl, the AFC’s Cleveland Browns, Houston Texans, and Jacksonville Jaguars and the NFC’s Detroit Lions are the only four teams that have not appeared in the Super Bowl.
