Penn State football safety Zakee Wheatley announced on social media that he will return for the 2025 season. The third-year player has one more year of eligibility remaining. “Sometimes it’s hard to put into words how lucky I am to wear the blue and white shirt and play this beautiful game in front of the best fans in the world! Thinking about what we have achieved so far as a team and what we still have to achieve this season makes me excited!” Wheatley wrote. “I have decided to return to Penn State next year for my final year!”

Wheatley replaced KJ Winston, who suffered a season-ending injury against Bowling Green in September. The Maryland native had 77 total tackles, four sacks, 1, 5 tackles for loss of ball and one interception. Wheatley has appeared in every game in the last three seasons and four in his first year. He has 130 tackles and three interceptions in his career. The veteran’s decision to return is huge, considering that Winston has declared for the 2025 NFL Draft and the possibility that Jaylen Reed will follow suit. Dejuan Lane, Antoine Belgrave-Shorter and Tyrece Mills are possible replacements for Reed.
