The New York Yankees avoided a devastating World Series loss by defeating the Los Angeles Dodgers 11-4 in Game 4 on Tuesday to stay in the game. The Dodgers still hold a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven game, but the Yankees finally have some steam after a slow start at the Fall Classic. New York scored just seven runs in the first three games combined before an 11-run outburst on Tuesday. Shortstop Anthony Volpe hit a third-inning grand slam to give the Yankees a 5-2 lead they would never relinquish, while second baseman Gleyber Torres hit a three-run homer in middle of the eighth inning with five runs.

The game began with a familiar script, as Los Angeles first baseman Freddie Freeman hit a two-run homer in the top of the first inning to give the Dodgers a 2-0 lead. Freeman has hit a homer in every game so far in this series and has a homerun in each of his last six World Series games since 2021. New York’s outfielder Alex Verdugo scored a run via a fielder’s choice late in the second period to cut the deficit in half. Volpe then hit his breaking ball an inning later to give them the lead. Los Angeles gradually moved forward, scoring two runs in the top of the fifth inning to close the gap to 5-4. But Yankees catcher Austin Wells hit a solo home run in the sixth inning before New York scored another run in the eighth.

Yankees star Aaron Judge the AL MVP front-runner who has struggled this postseason even got in on the game, hitting an RBI single for the team’s final run, the first run he scored during the series. The Dodgers opted for a bullpen game on Tuesday, even though they ironically used fewer pitchers than New York. Daniel Hudson, who let Volpe win the grand slam, suffered the loss.
