Courtney Banghart and the UNC women’s basketball team saw (and won) another tough challenge while holding on for victory against Virginia Tech on Thursday night at Carmichael Arena. Once again, the Tar Heels held the lead and appeared to be in good position to make a breakthrough. However, their opponents, this time the Hokies, fought back, regaining the lead with 1:08 left in the third quarter. One of the common themes in the second half was Lexi Donarski’s decisive genes. The fifth-year senior hit a jumper with two seconds left in the third period to regain the lead, but that wasn’t the only big shot she made in this match.
Trailing by a point with less than 30 seconds left, the UNC women’s basketball program needed points in a big way. Donarski didn’t have to look far as he drove the ball into the basket and hit a layup with his left hand to extend the lead to three. That scoring run, along with Reniya Kelly’s two successful free throws, gave the Tar Heels their 22nd win of the 2024-2025 season. Kelly once again stood out, leading all scorers with 20 points. Donarski was the only other Tar Heel to reach double digits (15 points), while Maria Gakdeng (8 points), Grace Townsend (8 points) and Indya Nivar (7 points) helped shoulder the scoring load. Alyssa Ustby scored just four points but grabbed 16 rebounds, becoming the third UNC women’s basketball player to reach the 2,000-rebound milestone. Thursday night was another reminder of how competitive the ACC is, as you can’t underestimate any opponent on any given night. The Tar Heels have certainly been tested all season long, as that won’t change when NC State comes into town on Sunday for a top-25 showdown.
