The dagger-like 46-yard touchdown pass to DeVonta Smith might have been Jalen Hurts’ greatest pass and certainly one of the greatest touchdown passes in Super Bowl history. I’ve seen this pass more than any play since 4th-and-26, easily 100 times more, and it never ceases to amaze me. The Eagles led 27-0 and had a first-and-10 on the Chiefs’ 46-yard line after Avonte Maddox’s 4th-down pass broke up early in the third quarter. Start with DeVonta, who separates from Chiefs corner Jaylen Watson right on the fight line. Watson tried to put pressure on Smith but couldn’t, and Smith just ran unhindered at top speed down the field towards the end zone. Hurts was incredibly protected on the ball from his o-line and Saquon Barkley and backup quarterback Grant Calcaterra both caught blitzes. He pretended to play with Barkley and when he threw the ball, there was no Chief within five feet of him. He has a clean pocket to work with, and he takes his time to get his feet down, set up and shoot. Smith first turned around to find the ball at the 30-yard line, which was a fraction of a second before Hurts released the ball. Smith never stopped. Never slow down.

Watson never turned back and never took the step where DeVonta passed him. Smith doesn’t have to move his hands until just before the ball arrives because the ball is pointing exactly at his hands. Smith danced just a little as he crossed the plane of the end zone and caught the ball slightly off the ground. Watson immediately wrestled Smith and tried to separate the ball, but Smith was not about to let go as he fell to the ground. The Eagles touched down and led 34-0. Smith and Hurts have known each other since Smith was in high school and Hurts was his host during his visit to Alabama. The two often talked about how instead of partying, they went to the rugby facility and threw and studied film. They’ve done countless reps together since then, spending countless hours learning, throwing against each other every season.
