Scully’s father, Vincent Aloysius Scully, a silk seller, died when Scully was just a boy, and after his mother, Bridget, remarried, the family moved from the Bronx to Washington Heights in Manhattan. Scully was fascinated by the crowd noise during college football radio broadcasts and wondered what it would be like to commentate on games himself. While a student at Incarnation School, he wrote a descriptive essay about how he wanted to be a sports commentator when he grew up. When he was about eight years old, he became a fan of the New York Giants because he felt sorry for them after their 18–4 loss to the New York Yankees in the second game of the 1936 World Series. His hero is Giants pitcher Mel Ott.
