If Igor Shesterkin does exactly what he did last season in 2022-23, the Rangers will win. So many. Shesterkin was the best goalie in the world last season and his .935 save percentage has been surpassed by only two goalies since the 1967 expansion of the NHL.It was a historic season. And if he can do it again, Chris Drury and Gerard Gallant and everyone else associated with the Rangers will happily take it. Scoring chances against Shesterkin from 2021-22 and those he has conceded, there is a real anomaly. Steve Valiquette, MSG Network studio analyst, founder of Clear Sight Hockey and now a regular contributor to our Rangers podcast, The Garden Faithful, discovered this surprising number while researching about Shesterkin’s great season.

And this anomaly appeared in the preseason loss to the Devils on Thursday. Shesterkin has conceded three goals, none of which were particularly good goals to concede. The first goal was scored by Miles Wood after what Clear Sight called “a half-ice escape”. In the category of breakthroughs there are three types that the goalkeeper must face. “There was a complete breakthrough that happened from the red line in,” Valiquette said on this week’s episode of The Garden Faithful. “Partial breakthrough, usually due to losing the ball or breaking, and that happens from the top of the circle. A little more element of surprise for the goalkeeper. Then the third type is the half-ice breakout, when your teammate is tracking back through the middle of the ice. So your defender prevents the puck holder from reaching the other side of the ice. This is actually a clear read for the goalkeeper, one-on-one. There is room for the puck holder but he will not be able to cross the ice.”
According to Clear Sight data from the entire league last season, separations were completely successful 31 percent of the time. Partial splits are 25.6 percent and partial splits are 18.2 percent any success rate below 20 percent is considered a medium-danger scoring chance average, while the first two phases are high risk based on the data. Shesterkin didn’t really excel at complete escapes last season. He has faced 18 of them and has blocked 17, best in the league. On partial escapes, he was still great — saving 26 of those 30, fifth best in the league.
