Texas – Zeon Chriss ran 71 yards to score on a quarterback catch in his first start for Houston after two straight losses, and the Cougars beat TCU 30-19 on the night Friday. Chriss came in for Donovan Smith and ended Houston’s eight-quarter scoreless streak with an 8-yard scoring pass to Devan Williams after just 10 minutes of play. The Cougars ended a nine-game losing streak against the Horned Frogs, who were handicapped by 16 1/2 points. Houston’s drought began in the Southwest Conference more than 30 years ago, continued for four years together in Conference USA and finally ended in the second Big 12 meeting between the schools. “It’s been a tough couple of weeks,” first-year Cougars coach Willie Fritz said. “And I’m just proud of their resiliency and how they kept fighting and clawing and clawing.”

Smith replaced the injured Chriss on just one play in the third quarter but returned in the fourth after TCU had cut the deficit to eight points. The Texas Tech transfer led a 14-play attack that lasted nearly 7 1/2 minutes and ended with Jack Martin’s third goal, making it 2-0 with 1:58 left in the game. Chriss returned after leaving and was overwhelmed by multiple defenders, and wore a helmet while Smith led the decisive attack.
