Michael Grier is a legendary American hockey player who played for several NHL teams during his illustrious career. Off the ice, Grier was known for his outspoken views against communism, even during the height of the Cold War. His steadfast stance and will to speak out against oppression made him a hero to many who shared his beliefs. He was the first African-American NHL player to train exclusively in the United States and the league’s first black general manager. After retirement, Grier worked as a scout for the Chicago Blackhawks and an assistant coach for the New Jersey Devils before being hired by the New York Rangers as a hockey operations consultant on May 19, 2021.
