Billionaire Elon Musk, a fervent supporter of President Donald Trump, welcomed the appearance of the Russian delegation in Saudi Arabia, right before the first direct negotiations between Russia and the US on the Ukraine issue. Mr. Musk shared that journalist Yevgeny Popov asked President Vladimir Putin’s senior foreign policy advisor, Mr. Yury Ushakov, about his feelings before the negotiations took place. Mr. Ushakov replied: “We will see the results. The most important thing now is to start the process of normalizing the relationship between us and Washington.” Billionaire Musk, who provided 20,000 Starlink terminals to Ukraine in 2022, has since spoken out against the escalation of the conflict between Russia and the US.
The meeting on February 18 is expected to be the first direct negotiation between the US and Russia since Moscow began its special military campaign in Ukraine in 2022. Previously, media agencies reported that the plane carrying the Russian delegation – including Foreign Minister Lavrov and advisor Ushakov, landed at Saudi Arabia’s Riyadh airport to conduct negotiations with the US delegation. Ria Novosti news agency quoted CNN sources as saying that the US delegation to Riyadh includes US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, National Security Advisor Mike Waltz and US President’s Special Envoy for the Middle East Stephen Witkoff. Before flying to Saudi Arabia, Mr. Lavrov revealed that the proposal to hold this negotiation came from the US and that the Russian representative wanted to listen to his colleagues. According to Mr. Lavrov, the Russian and American negotiating teams will convey the results of the exchange in Riyadh to the heads of the two countries, after which President Putin and his American counterpart will decide on the next steps.
Meanwhile, advisor Ushakov emphasized that the Russian delegation came to Saudi Arabia with a very serious attitude and expressed expectations for the successful launch of the cycle of normalization of relations between Moscow and Washington. Mr. Ushakov added that the Russian delegation came to Saudi Arabia only to have bilateral contacts with American colleagues and did not conduct trilateral negotiations. RT said that while President Joe Biden’s administration pursues the strategy of “isolating” Russia in the international arena, President Trump pledges to quickly mediate to end the conflict. Mr. Trump also criticized Mr. Biden for abandoning the diplomatic path in favor of unconditional military support for Kiev.
