The heavyweight bout between Dylan McIlrath and Matt Rempe was a work of art. This is the pinnacle of entertainment. This is sport. It’s crazy that this is just a random Tuesday night in the National Hockey League. I mean, sure, the Rangers versus the Capitals is a great rivalry and those games are always pretty tense. But it’s not like this game has any major significance beyond the fact that the Capitals have a mutant heavyweight in Dylan McIlrath, the Rangers have a mutant heavyweight in Matt Rempe, and the two teams decided it was time to test it out. See which mutant can defeat the other.

And what a great fight it was as expected. Both guys landed a few shots early. They lock up with the left hand, and that’s where I think Dylan McIlrath really has a big advantage over Rempe. Matt Rempe is big and he’s scary and he can throw some heavy right punches. But he doesn’t have the ability to use his left hand to really control the fight the way McIlrath does here. That’s where the struggle begins. He landed a few good shots with his left hand, which got him close enough to land another right punch or two, and then finally got his opponent down. Both guys had a great shot, but the win clearly belonged to McIlrath.

Here’s what I’ll say about some of these hardcore matches as they become more frequent in the tournament again – I feel like you almost have to have these guys take off their helmets before getting into the match. If you’re going to make people wear visors, you can’t make these guys go out and smash their fists into polycarbonate shields. It’s bad enough that they have to punch plastic helmets out there, but the shield actually makes it seem more dangerous. Talk about cutting your fist into your helmet…
