The Detroit Lions have a 12-2 record this season and are looking to bounce back after losing 48-42 to the Buffalo Bills last week. Not only did they lose the match, but they also saw many key players leave the field due to injury. RB David Montgomery , DL Alim McNeill, CB Carlton Davis and Khalil Dorsey all had to leave the field for different reasons. McNeill is out this year with an anterior cruciate ligament injury, and they lost DL Aidan Hutchinson for the entire season after he broke his tibia and fibula in Week 6 of the season. This group has an NFL-high 21 players on IR, which is not good for a team expected to advance to the Super Bowl in the playoffs. The Lions are relying on the depth they built up last season but they could be presented with a golden opportunity to add another presence along the trenches.
Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports that the Miami Dolphins will fire DL Calais Campbell if they are eliminated from the playoffs to give him a chance to join a contending team. The Dolphins have a 6-8 record on the season, but they need to win their remaining three games and get help from other teams to make the playoffs. According to NFL.com, Miami has a 6% chance of making the playoffs. They have the San Francisco 49ers, Cleveland Browns and New York Jets remaining on the schedule. While they may be favored in two of those three matches, the odds are against them. Campbell, 38, is still playing at a high level for the Dolphins. He had 43 total tackles, ten tackles for loss, five pass deflections and four tackles for loss. He would fill a major hole on defense and help offset some of the losses Detroit faced. This is something to keep an eye on over the next few weeks, but it’s possible that Campbell will hit the open market. If he comes out, Detroit should make signing him a priority.
