One of the most important management decisions of the 2024 World Series was made by Dave Roberts at the end of Game 5 when he decided to keep Blake Treinen on the mound in the eighth inning in a game that scored just one run. Roberts admitted he received tacit help from Freddie Freeman in making that decision. Roberts took to the mound to evaluate how Treinen was doing after the veteran allowed a double to Aaron Judge and a walk to Jazz Chisholm. With Giancarlo Stanton coming into the batting lineup, it’s no surprise that the right-handed pitcher has bargained to keep playing.

Treinen got Stanton to hit the ball lightly, and Roberts was about to pull him away after the hit, before seeing Freeman glance out of his peripheral vision. “I give credit to Freddie,” Roberts said via ESPN. “Freddie waved at me. He subtly said, ‘Hey, let him stay.’ So then I trusted the players, and Blake made the offer.” Roberts had Treinen on the mound facing Anthony Rizzo, despite reaching 40 pitches at that point and pitching in a less favorable matchup in terms of forehands. He missed him with four pitches, paving the way for Walker Buehler to steal the ninth inning and close the door on the Yankees. If Roberts hadn’t caught Freeman’s eye out of the corner of his eye, he might have decided to change pitchers, which could have dramatically altered the course of the rest of the game.
