What a great way to celebrate Cooper DeJean’s 22nd birthday. DeJean became the first player in Super Bowl history to intercept a pass or score a touchdown on his birthday when he returned a missed Patrick Mahomes pass 38 yards for a touchdown, giving Philadelphia a 17-0 lead over Kansas City in the second quarter of the Eagles’ big win. It was also a pretty sweet 28th birthday for DeJean’s teammate, Saquon Barkley , who set the single-season record for total yards gained during the regular season and playoffs. But it was DeJean who had the biggest play. DeJean broke up a pass from DeAndre Hopkins and intercepted Mahomes before rushing in to score. DeJean said his thinking is simple when he has the ball. “Score a touchdown,” he said. “I was trying to find the fastest way to the end zone. Luckily, I blocked a few shots there. I had to avoid some of those big guys, but it was just our defense coming together like we’ve done all year. It fell right into my lap.”

It was the first pick-six in a Super Bowl since Robert Alford had one for Atlanta against Tom Brady and New England eight years ago. That run gave the Falcons a 21-0 lead that grew to 28-3 in the second quarter before the Patriots pulled off the biggest comeback in Super Bowl history. That was the only time a team lost a Super Bowl after returning a blocked punt for a field goal, while 13 other teams have now all won, including Tampa Bay in a three-return performance against the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl 37. DeJean and teammate Saquon Barkley are the 15th and 16th players to appear in the Super Bowl on their birthdays, according to Sportradar. None of those players ever scored a touchdown or intercepted a pass against DeJean.
