John Bosco, in traditional Italian, “Don” is a term of honor or Giovanni Bosco, is a saint of the Roman Catholic Church. Famous as an orator in Turin, he is best known, however, as the founder of the Salesian order in 1852. In 1859, John Bosco and his comrades officially founded the Congregation of St. Francis de Sales, with the implication of imitating the example of Apostolic Charity, Meekness and Patience. On March 25, 1855, Michael Rua became the first monk to take his religious vows. In 1860, Giuse Rossi became the first Brother accepted into the Order. Then, on June 14, 1862, 22 other Salesians took their vows. John Bosco also founded the Congregation of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians on August 5, 1872. In 1876, he founded the Association of Salesian Cooperators. These three Groups and many later established Groups joined together to form the Family, a unified Catholic social organization. In 1872, he continued to establish two other religious congregations: the Society of Our Lady of Perpetual Help to sponsor priestly vocations; The Salésienne Congregation aims to educate orphans. These organizations had widespread influence while he was still alive.
