When Detroit Tigers manager AJ Hinch told reporters that his pitching plan for the Wild Card Series was to get Tarik Skubal into Game 1 and “pitching chaos” afterward, it wasn’t a joke. Skubal, who is coming off a Major League Cy Young award, will of course start Game 1, a decision Hinch called the easiest of his managerial tenure. After that, the Tigers will likely send a few players to throw multiple innings. Reese Olson and Brant Hurter are the first names but Game 2 and Game 3 will truly be bullpen games.

We’ll get more clues when the postseason roster is released Tuesday morning, hours before the Tigers take the field for their series opener against the Houston Astros. The first kickoff is at 2:32 p.m. ET at Minute Maid Park. Rookie Keider Montero also seems unlikely to make the roster. He threw 56 pitches Sunday. While Montero could theoretically throw in Game 3, his usage in the regular-season finale suggests that is not a top priority for the Tigers. Casey Mize, the only pitcher not banned Sunday, threw 39 pitches. Rookie Ty Madden threw 60 pitches on Saturday. Both could be in danger.
